So how can you stay in touch with email where there are no phone or communication services? You will just need a computer, a radio-modem and a HF CODAN radio with antenna. As the schematic below shows, the remote PC will connect through a radio signal to the CRMF mailserver which is connected to the Internet.
The radio email transfer is working with a software especially programmed for HF email called “UUPlus“. Once installed and set up you can send and receive email with any ordinary email program like Outlook Express or Thunderbird. CRMF has 3 data radio modems (2 HF, 1 VHF) so 3 customers can do radio emailing at the same time. Customers have the possibility to connect through a phone-modem, satellite-phone or a VPN connection.

Compared to today’s fast broadband connections radio signal connections are very slow. But the UUPlus software still achieves a good throughput speed using a compressed, bi-directional data transfer. HF email works perfectly fine with pure text messages and even small pictures under 100K.
